The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to staff welfare and transparent electoral processes, as Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu led the commission’s routine weekly meeting on Thursday.
Contrary to widespread speculation on social media alleging that Professor Yakubu had begun his terminal leave, he presided over the session, which approved the promotion of 471 junior employees of the commission.
According to Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the meeting also reviewed preparations for the forthcoming Anambra State governorship election, the Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as party primaries for the governorship races in Ekiti and Osun States.

Olumekun revealed that the Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee (APDC) recommended the elevation of 471 staff in accordance with INEC’s Staff Conditions of Service. Out of 515 employees shortlisted for the exercise, 214 qualified for promotion to Grade Level 07, 134 to Grade Level 06, 106 to Grade Level 05, and 17 to Grade Level 04.
“This promotion exercise marks the conclusion of the first phase, which focuses on junior staff. The second phase, targeting senior staff promotions, has already commenced,” Olumekun stated.
He emphasized that promotions within INEC remain a regular and merit-based process designed to enhance staff motivation, professional growth, and service delivery. “We encourage all staff to remain committed to excellence, especially as Nigeria prepares for critical elections and other electoral activities,” he added.
The move underscores INEC’s dedication to strengthening internal structures and maintaining its workforce ahead of major electoral events nationwide.
