INEC announces February 20, 2027 for Nigeria’s presidential election, releasing full timetable for primaries, campaigns, and governorship polls.

Nigeria’s electoral body has officially unveiled the timetable for the 2027 general elections, setting February 20, 2027, as the date for the presidential and National Assembly polls.

The announcement was made by the Independent National Electoral Commission, marking a significant step in preparations for the next democratic cycle. According to the commission, governorship and State House of Assembly elections will follow two weeks later, scheduled for March 6, 2027.

Under the approved timetable, political parties are expected to conduct their primaries between July and September 2026 to select candidates for various offices. Submission of candidates’ lists to the commission will take place in October 2026, while official campaign activities are set to commence in November 2026. The commission emphasized that the schedule aligns strictly with provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022.

This marks the first comprehensive election timetable released under the leadership of Chairman Amupitan, who assumed office in October 2025. The development comes at a time when voter registration exercises are ongoing nationwide, with stakeholders urging the commission to ensure transparency and credibility in the electoral process.
