Iran launches 400 missiles at Gulf states in retaliation for U.S. strikes, causing casualties, airspace closures, and regional tensions.

Iran’s latest military action has sent shockwaves across the Middle East, dramatically escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington while rattling Gulf nations hosting American assets.

In a major show of force, Iran launched approximately 400 missiles and drones toward several Gulf countries between February 28 and March 1. The strikes targeted locations in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman, focusing primarily on facilities linked to U.S. military operations.

Tehran described the offensive as retaliation for recent joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes that reportedly killed senior Iranian officials, including individuals said to be close to Ali Khamenei. The escalation underscores a rapidly deteriorating security climate in the region.

Despite the scale of the assault, coordinated air defense systems across the Gulf intercepted a significant portion of the incoming missiles and drones. Authorities reported contained fires at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port and structural damage to a hotel in Bahrain.

In the UAE, officials confirmed three fatalities and 58 injuries. No U.S. casualties were reported. Emergency services in affected areas moved quickly to prevent further damage, helping limit the broader humanitarian impact.

The attacks triggered widespread airspace closures across the Gulf. Major airports temporarily suspended operations, stranding hundreds of thousands of passengers. Dubai International Airport became a focal point of the disruption, with the UAE government stepping in to assist approximately 20,200 stranded travelers by covering accommodation and related costs.

Airlines across Europe, Asia, and Africa rerouted or canceled flights, creating ripple effects throughout the global aviation network.

In a significant strategic move, Iran announced the activation of what it calls its “Decentralized Mosaic Defense” doctrine. The approach grants regional commanders greater autonomy in battlefield decision-making, allowing faster and more localized responses without awaiting centralized approval.

Security analysts believe this doctrine could complicate efforts to predict Iran’s next steps, as operational authority is distributed across multiple command structures rather than concentrated in Tehran.

The missile barrage marks one of the most expansive direct attacks by Iran on Gulf states in recent years. With U.S. military assets embedded across the region, the risk of broader confrontation remains high.
International observers are closely monitoring diplomatic channels to determine whether de-escalation is possible or whether further retaliation could unfold.

As global markets react and regional governments heighten security, the Middle East faces a volatile and uncertain period.
