Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), a move that has triggered a major political realignment in the state. The governor’s decision comes alongside the reported exit of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and all 44 Local Government chairmen across the state.
Governor Yusuf conveyed his decision through an official letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area. In the letter, he stated that his resignation from the party would take effect on Sunday, January 25, 2026, although the announcement was made earlier on Friday, January 23, 2026.
In his message, the governor expressed appreciation to the NNPP leadership and members for the opportunity to serve under the party’s platform since 2022. He acknowledged the support, cooperation, and goodwill he received throughout his time in the party, describing his political journey with the NNPP as significant and impactful.
Governor Yusuf explained that his decision was influenced by persistent internal crises within the party. According to him, ongoing leadership disputes and multiple legal battles, many of which are currently before the courts, have weakened the party’s structure and stability. He noted that these unresolved issues have led to widespread disenfranchisement among party members and created deep divisions at both state and national levels.
The governor further stated that the growing internal rifts appear increasingly difficult to reconcile, generating uncertainty that could negatively affect governance and public confidence. After what he described as careful reflection, he concluded that stepping away from the NNPP was necessary and in the best interest of the people of Kano State.
Emphasizing goodwill, Governor Yusuf stressed that his resignation was taken without hostility or resentment. He reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and the continued development of Kano State, assuring residents that his focus remains on progress and stability despite the political shift.
