Kwankwaso reacts to Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection to APC, calling it a betrayal and warning it could cost him future elections.
Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has strongly criticized the reported defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a deep betrayal with serious political consequences.
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Kwankwaso expressed disappointment over the governor’s decision, stating that it was completely unexpected given the political journey that brought Abba Yusuf to power. According to him, the defection signals a loss of popular support and could significantly weaken the governor’s chances in future elections.
Kwankwaso warned that once influential figures within the Kwankwasiyya political structure withdraw their backing, electoral defeat becomes inevitable. He insisted that grassroots support, rather than party switching, determines political survival in Kano State.
Addressing possible justifications for the defection, the former governor dismissed claims that Abba Yusuf was prevented from governing effectively. He stressed that the Kwankwasiyya movement had consistently supported democratic governance and would respond decisively to any narrative suggesting otherwise.
