Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed speculations suggesting he is planning to dump the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the NNPP’s 9th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, Kwankwaso described the rumours of his defection as baseless.
“Many people thought today we will announce whether I will stay in the NNPP or move to another party. That was never the intention of this meeting. We have our party, and we are happy with it,” he told party members.
Kwankwaso, who also served as Minister of Defence, emphasized that while the NNPP remains his political base, he is open to dialogue and collaboration with other political stakeholders across the country.
“We believe we have something to offer at the highest level of leadership in this country. We are willing to engage in discussions with anyone, but any negotiation will be collective,” he added.

During the meeting, NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed, officially confirmed Kwankwaso as the party’s flagbearer for the 2027 presidential election. He described him as a “visionary leader” whose popularity and experience will strengthen the party’s drive for national leadership.
With this declaration, the NNPP has positioned Kwankwaso as its major contender in the 2027 race, setting the stage for an intense political buildup.
