The leadership and stakeholders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone F, have formally commended Chief Daniel Chimezie Okeke, widely known as Mezie Abia, for his outstanding record of humanitarian service, philanthropy, and community development across Abia State and its environs.

In a statement issued by the zonal leadership, NANS Zone F described Chief Okeke as a model of purposeful leadership whose private achievements have been consistently channeled toward public good. Hailing from Ubila-Ututu in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, he has built a reputation as a successful entrepreneur, scholar, community leader, and humanitarian with far-reaching impact in education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and infrastructure development.

The student body particularly applauded his sustained commitment to educational advancement, citing his investments in classroom construction, ICT centres, and learning facilities across several communities. Notably, the recent commissioning of a new classroom block at Ukwuakwu Secondary School, Ututu, was highlighted as a testament to his dedication to improving learning conditions and securing a brighter future for students.

Chief Okeke’s influence also extends significantly into healthcare and social welfare. Through initiatives such as the Mezie Abia Annual Free Medical Outreach and Surgery Foundation, hundreds of underserved residents have received critical medical care. His efforts in preventing avoidable blindness and promoting community health have earned recognition from professional bodies, including the Nigeria Optometric Association (NOA), underscoring his deep compassion for humanity.

Beyond education and health, NANS Zone F acknowledged his wide-ranging community projects, which include the construction of a civic centre and customary court building, provision of boreholes and electricity transformers, road interventions, scholarship schemes, youth skills acquisition and start-up support, as well as job creation through his business ventures. These interventions have collectively enhanced livelihoods across Arochukwu, Ohafia, and the wider Abia North zone.

The association emphasized that these achievements were recorded without Chief Okeke holding any elected public office, describing his actions as a rare demonstration of civic responsibility and voluntary service. His numerous awards from religious institutions, community groups, and professional organizations further reflect his unwavering commitment to grassroots development.

In recognition of his enduring contributions to education, youth development, healthcare, and community transformation, NANS Zone F has unanimously recommended Chief Daniel Chimezie Okeke for a special humanitarian service award. The association has requested a mutually convenient date to formally present the honour as a symbol of appreciation from Nigerian students nationwide.
