Nigeria’s National Assembly approves the creation of a new state in the South-East, ensuring equal representation across all geo-political zones.
In a historic move, the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Constitution Review has unanimously endorsed the creation of an additional state in Nigeria’s South-East geo-political zone.
The decision, reached after extensive deliberations and consultations, aims to address long-standing concerns over regional imbalance in the country’s federal structure. With the approval, the South-East will now have six states placing it on equal footing with the South-South, South-West, North-Central, and North-East regions.
Lawmakers hailed the development as a step toward equity, fairness, and inclusive governance, emphasizing that the creation of the new state will strengthen national unity and political representation for the people of the South-East.
The proposal is expected to proceed to the next legislative stage, where it will undergo further consideration and ratification before formal implementation.
If successfully finalized, this marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s constitutional evolution and could pave the way for enhanced socio-economic growth and regional development in the South-East.
