The House of Representatives has adopted a significant motion sponsored by Hon. Obi Aguocha, Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, aimed at tackling the soaring cost of airline tickets and air ambulance services across Nigeria.

The motion, classified as one of Urgent National Importance, was driven by the increasing financial pressure Nigerians face when traveling during the festive season. Hon. Aguocha highlighted how the sharp rise in airfares undermines family reunions, cultural traditions, and national unity. His submission drew widespread concern among lawmakers, prompting extensive debate and immediate legislative action.

Key Resolutions Adopted by the National Assembly

  1. Creation of a Transparent Airline Cost Assessment Framework

The House approved the establishment of a mechanism that will accurately determine the minimum operational costs of airlines during peak travel periods. This initiative is expected to curb arbitrary fare hikes and ensure fairness in the aviation industry.

  1. Development of a Structured Tax Relief System for Operators

In response to the call for targeted subsidies, the House resolved that relief for airlines will take the form of a structured tax-relief mechanism. This approach aligns with Nigeria’s current economic strategy and is designed to translate into lower ticket prices for travelers, especially during the Yuletide season.

  1. CBN–Aviation Sector Partnership on Forex Support

Lawmakers endorsed a directive urging the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to collaborate with airline operators by prioritizing foreign exchange allocation at concessionary rates. This is expected to stabilize airline operational costs and reduce airfare volatility.

  1. Referral to the House Committee on Aviation

The motion has been referred to the House Committee on Aviation with instructions to interface with stakeholders, including airline operators and regulatory agencies. The Committee is expected to submit its findings within seven days for further legislative steps.

Aguocha’s Advocacy: Championing People-Centered Policies

Hon. Obi Aguocha’s legislative victory underscores his continued commitment to easing the economic challenges faced by Nigerians. His motion reflects a deep understanding of how rising travel costs affect social bonds, especially during festive seasons when families seek to reunite.

At a time when economic realities threaten cultural traditions and family togetherness, his intervention offers renewed hope for more affordable domestic travel. Hon. Aguocha has reinforced an essential principle: every Nigerian deserves the ability to journey home without undue financial burden.
