Nigeria Police defend tinted-glass permit policy after NBA lawsuit, citing legal backing and public safety benefits.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has responded to reports that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has taken legal action against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) over the enforcement of the tinted-glass permit policy.

In a press release dated 10 September 2025, Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin emphasized that the issuance of tinted-glass permits remains legal and grounded in existing Nigerian laws.

According to the statement, Section 2(3a) of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004 empowers the IGP or any authorized representative to grant permits for tinted glass use. It further states under Section 1(2) that applicants must provide a valid reason—such as health or security concerns—before approval can be issued.

The Police explained that the policy aims to enhance public safety by curbing crimes like kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, and “one-chance” operations. They also stressed that charges for the permits are strictly processing fees used to maintain the digital infrastructure supporting the service. This is in line with Section 26(e) and (f) of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, which authorizes the Police to provide specialized services to the public for a fee.

Highlighting the success of its Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR), the NPF noted that the system has helped recover numerous stolen vehicles across Nigeria, demonstrating the effectiveness of modernized policing and digital infrastructure.

The Force firmly rejected claims questioning the legality and transparency of the policy, calling such assertions “untrue and misleading.” The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Police’s commitment to professionalism, transparency, and the protection of citizens’ fundamental rights.

With this statement, the NPF reiterated its determination to uphold the rule of law and ensure a safer Nigeria through lawful and transparent policing practices.
