In a significant move aimed at advancing efforts to secure his release, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has officially issued a Letter of Authority empowering Hon. Obi Aguocha, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, to interface with the Federal Government of Nigeria on his behalf.
The letter, dated 11th July 2024, was issued by Kanu through his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, of Aloy Ejimakor Legal Services (Obidimkpa Chambers). The document authorizes Hon. Aguocha to directly engage government officials with the aim of pursuing a political solution to Kanu’s prolonged detention and ongoing prosecution.
According to the content of the letter, Ejimakor acting on Kanu’s firm instruction granted the lawmaker full authority to initiate discussions and negotiations with relevant federal authorities to explore all possible avenues toward a peaceful resolution.
The letter stated in part:
“You are hereby authorized by our Client to approach the Federal Government, with a view to resolving the matter of our Client’s continued detention, prosecution, and all issues related thereto.”
It further clarified that Hon. Aguocha has the discretion and independence to decide what best serves Kanu’s interest while maintaining close collaboration with the legal team. Specifically, the letter gives Aguocha the power to seek a political settlement that could lead to Kanu’s release from detention and the discontinuance of his trial.

Ejimakor, who shared the document publicly via his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, expressed deep appreciation for Hon. Aguocha’s courage and commitment in advocating for justice.
In his post, he wrote:
“Before and after you were given the letter of authority posted here, you’ve been in the trenches and on the pulpit demanding justice for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and the impact has been very profound. You’re indeed a true leader and gutsy to boot. Thank you.”
The development has drawn wide attention, as it signals a possible strategic shift in Kanu’s legal and political approach from courtroom litigation to constructive dialogue and negotiation with the Federal Government.
Political analysts view the move as a calculated attempt to pave the way for a broader reconciliation process and a peaceful resolution to the lingering case that has drawn national and international interest.
Hon. Obi Aguocha has been one of the most vocal lawmakers advocating for the rule of law, human rights, and justice for Nnamdi Kanu. His official authorization by Kanu himself through legal counsel further solidifies his position as a key figure in the renewed effort to resolve the issue through peaceful means.
As consultations continue, expectations remain high among supporters that this new approach could mark a turning point in the prolonged struggle for Kanu’s freedom.
