Abia State hosts NIDSUG leaders to ensure peace, transparency, and credible student elections in October 2025.
On Thursday, September 11, 2025, I convened a pivotal meeting with representatives and state leadership of the Niger Delta Students Union Government (NIDSUG), ably led by Comrade Uchechukwu Chika, Coordinator of the Abia State axis. The meeting was attended by the Global President of the union Comrade Scott Ogunseri, and Comrade Faith Agomuo, National Vice President Projects, who participated online, alongside other Executive Council members, including the Secretary General.
The primary objective of the meeting was to forge a pathway for peace and reconciliation amidst disagreements over the transition process and presidential ticket zoning to Abia, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states. Presently, Abia boasts three aspirants vying for the presidency: Comrade Wisdom Adighibe from Rivers State University(Obingwa LGA), Comrade Uchechukwu Chika from Abia State University(Ukwa west), and Comrade Jonathan Ogolo from Abia State University(Ukwa east).

The discord between the union leadership and stakeholders, allegedly fueled by secret sponsorship of interests, has further divided the union. Nonetheless, Abia State has been entrusted with hosting the election convention in October, a testament to the recent strides made in enhancing security and infrastructure under the stewardship of our amiable Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti.
During the meeting, the state leadership articulated their disappointments and disagreements with national leaders, deliberating on key issues confronting the union, including the process and criteria for eligibility to contest. Comrade Faith Agomuo underscored the significance of competence profiling to select the most suitable flag bearer for Abia State in the forthcoming election. The aspirants are expected to embark on nationwide consultations to chart the future of the ticket.
Comrade Scott Ogunseri highlighted NIDSUG’s strategic partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) aimed at enhancing student welfare, encompassing hostel construction and renovation, as well as bursary awards. He commended Governor Dr. Alex Otti’s transformative initiatives in Abia, spanning educational reforms, infrastructural development, security enhancement, and healthcare improvement.
Following exhaustive deliberations, I issued directives to Abia aspirants to submit their respective work plans and more importantly their presence and personal details for thorough profiling by law enforcement agencies.

To ensure a seamless and credible election process should the union’s electoral convention be conducted in Abia State, the union has mandated to adhere to the following guidelines:

- Verify the eligibility of chapter senators more importantly Abia extraction who intend to vote, ensuring they are duly registered students of the Union in accordance with its constitution.
- Require aspirants currently occupying positions to step down and submit their resignation letters to the national secretariat or electoral committee within a stipulated timeframe.
- Ensure that all union proposals to the state government are channeled through verified leaders of the association, maintaining the confidentiality of personal matters.
- Mandate the presence of all aspirants in meetings with the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Abia State.
- Secure a peace agreement between all aspirants and voters with the Nigeria Police Force and Department of State Service (DSS), Abia State command.
These directives are designed to guarantee a peaceful, secure, and credible election process. I expect the union to implement these guidelines expeditiously, thereby ensuring the triumph and safety of our community during the elections.
