In a bold legislative move, the Nigerian Senate has passed two powerful bills that mark a major turning point in the fight against crime, exploitation, and illegal resource extraction across the country.
The first of these landmark bills establishes the Nigeria Mines Rangers Service (NMRS) a new paramilitary agency created to combat illegal mining activities nationwide. The Senate said the NMRS will play a vital role in protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources, enforcing mining laws, and promoting sustainable and lawful mining operations.

Lawmakers emphasized that the unchecked activities of illegal miners have contributed significantly to environmental damage, loss of revenue, and insecurity in many parts of the country. The new agency will work closely with other security organizations to restore order in mining communities and ensure that all mining is done within the boundaries of the law.
In the same plenary session, senators also approved a second historic bill mandating life imprisonment with no option of fine for anyone found guilty of sexual intercourse with a minor.
The bill seeks to protect children from sexual predators and ensure that offenders face the full consequences of their actions. Lawmakers described the legislation as a “zero-tolerance measure” aimed at deterring sexual abuse and strengthening Nigeria’s legal framework for child protection.
Human rights advocates and child welfare organizations have commended the Senate for taking such decisive action, calling the law a “necessary and long-overdue step” toward justice and safety for Nigerian children.
Both bills reflect the Senate’s renewed commitment to justice, national security, and human dignity, signaling a stronger stance against lawlessness and abuse in all forms.
