The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has intensified efforts to bolster the nation’s security architecture with plans to accelerate the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters. This development forms part of a broader strategy to enhance the Air Force’s operational readiness and combat effectiveness in addressing security challenges across the country.
In pursuit of this objective, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, recently led a Programme Management Review meeting in San Diego, California, United States. The high-level engagement brought together senior officials of the United States Government and representatives of Bell Textron, the manufacturer of the AH-1Z helicopters. Discussions at the meeting centered on expediting delivery timelines and ensuring seamless execution of the helicopter acquisition programme.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information of the NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Air Marshal Aneke commended the U.S. Government and Bell Textron for their sustained collaboration, professionalism, and transparency throughout the procurement process. He emphasized that the helicopters would significantly enhance the NAF’s ability to maintain a professional, mission-ready force capable of delivering decisive airpower in support of national security objectives.
The Air Chief further described the AH-1Z acquisition as more than a mere upgrade of military hardware, noting that it symbolizes the enduring defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States. He reaffirmed the NAF’s sense of urgency and commitment to ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to facilitate the timely delivery of the aircraft.
