As part of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebrations, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has granted amnesty to 36 convicted inmates across the state.

In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke revealed that the decision was based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

The governor emphasized that the amnesty reflects the true spirit of Independence Day, which embodies compassion, justice, and national renewal. He explained that most of the beneficiaries had been convicted of minor offences, including stealing and conspiracy, and had already served a significant portion of their jail terms.

According to the official release, 29 convicts were discharged from the Ilesa Correctional Centre, while seven others were freed from the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre.

Governor Adeleke reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice and fairness, stressing that the gesture was a step towards rehabilitation, reconciliation, and giving second chances to deserving individuals.
