U.S. Mission confirms valid F1 and J1 visas for Nigerian students remain unaffected by Presidential Proclamation 10998 restrictions.
The United States Mission Nigeria has reassured Nigerian students and exchange participants that their valid F1 and J1 visas remain unaffected by recent U.S. visa restrictions.
According to the Mission, students and scholars whose F1 and J1 visas were issued before January 1, 2026, will not experience any disruption under Presidential Proclamation 10998. The proclamation, which partially suspends certain visa categories for nationals of 19 countries including Nigeria was introduced over concerns such as vetting deficiencies and high visa overstay rates.
However, the clarification makes it clear that Nigerian students already enrolled in American institutions can continue their academic programs, research activities, and innovation projects without interruption. The announcement provides much-needed relief to the more than 21,000 Nigerian students who studied in the United States in the past year.
The update was widely reported by major Nigerian media outlets, including Channels Television and The Punch, helping to calm anxieties among students and their families.
While current visa holders are protected, prospective applicants seeking new visas under affected categories may encounter stricter scrutiny and additional processing requirements. Authorities have encouraged students to stay informed through official U.S. government communication channels for accurate updates.
