The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has confirmed that it has completed a comprehensive medical examination of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, as directed by the court.
According to the NMA Secretary-General, Dr. Benjamin Egbo, the association acted promptly following a directive from the Department of State Services (DSS) after the court’s order. The report of the medical evaluation has since been submitted to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) for review.

Egbo explained that a specialized medical panel was constituted to ensure fairness and professionalism in the assessment process. The committee comprised seven doctors drawn from each of Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, representing various medical specialties including Ophthalmology, Neurology, Urology, and Gastroenterology, among others.
“The court gave an order that we should conduct the evaluation within eight days. Immediately the DSS wrote to us, we set up a committee of seven doctors with a coordinator, making it eight members in total,” Dr. Egbo stated.
The examination follows ongoing legal proceedings surrounding Kanu’s detention, with his legal team consistently raising concerns over his health condition. The submission of the medical report is expected to play a crucial role in determining the next steps in the case.
The NMA emphasized that the evaluation was carried out with utmost integrity, transparency, and adherence to medical ethics.
