Nnamdi Kanu names Malami, Wike, Umahi, Sanwo-Olu, Danjuma, and Buratai as witnesses in his terrorism defence before the Federal High Court, Abuja.
In a dramatic twist to his ongoing terrorism trial, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has named several high-profile Nigerians as witnesses in his defence before the Federal High Court, Abuja.
Kanu, who faces charges bordering on terrorism, personally signed and filed a fresh motion on October 21, 2025, before Justice James Omotosho, signaling his readiness to open his defence as directed by the court.

In the motion, Kanu revealed plans to call 23 witnesses, categorizing them into ordinary but material witnesses and vital and compellable witnesses. Among those listed are former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN); former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; Minister of Works, David Umahi; Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; retired General Theophilus Danjuma; and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd).
Kanu’s defence team argued that the testimonies of these prominent figures are crucial to establishing his innocence and clarifying the circumstances surrounding the charges against him.
He also appealed to the court to grant a 90-day window to enable him call and examine all the witnesses adequately.
The case is expected to resume soon, with national attention once again focused on how the testimonies of these influential Nigerians might shape the outcome of one of the most closely watched trials in Nigeria’s legal history.
