Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has raised concerns over the silence of Igbo elites and intelligentsia on the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking in Umuahia on Wednesday, Aguocha questioned why prominent sons and daughters of the South-East, particularly those in academia, politics, business, and religion, have not spoken with one voice to demand a just resolution of Kanu’s case.

According to him, the prolonged detention of the IPOB leader, despite several court rulings, is not just a legal issue but a moral burden on the conscience of the Igbo nation. He maintained that history would not be kind to the elite if they chose silence over justice at such a critical moment.

Where are our voices? Where are the Igbo intelligentsia, the statesmen, the clergy, and the business leaders? Silence in the face of injustice is complicity. This is the time to speak with one accord, not just for Nnamdi Kanu, but for the dignity of our people,” Aguocha said.

The lawmaker reiterated his call for a political solution to Kanu’s incarceration, stressing that peace, reconciliation, and justice are indispensable to addressing the deep-rooted grievances in the South-East.

He also warned that the marginalization and alienation of voices calling for equity could further deepen mistrust and weaken national cohesion.

Aguocha’s remarks come amid growing appeals from stakeholders urging the Federal Government to explore dialogue and reconciliation as pathways to peace in the region.
