A 25-year-old labourer has been confirmed dead after a building foundation wall collapsed at an excavation site in Abuja.
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) said the incident happened around 5:50 p.m. on Monday at Radio House, Area 8, Garki.
In a statement by FEMD’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, two workers were trapped after the wall gave way while they were digging about seven feet underground. One was rescued alive, while the other sustained severe injuries and later died.
Acting Director-General of FEMD, Abdulrahman Mohammed, described the incident as tragic and called on developers to prioritize safety at construction sites. He urged builders to stop patronizing unqualified workers, stressing that non-compliance with safety standards often leads to avoidable deaths.
He further reminded residents of Abuja to call the 112 toll-free emergency line whenever disasters occur.
Building collapses are a recurring problem in the FCT. In August 2022, two people were killed when a three-storey building under reconstruction collapsed in Kubwa. Similarly, in February 2023, at least three people died after a structure in Gwarinpa came down following illegal alterations by developers.
Experts continue to blame weak enforcement of building codes, use of substandard materials, and the involvement of quacks for such incidents across Nigeria.
