The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has directed a comprehensive survey of all lands belonging to the Nigerian Postal Service across the state, as part of efforts to protect public assets and prevent illegal encroachment.
The directive was issued during a meeting with the Abia State Postal Manager, Mrs. Winifred Amadi, who paid a courtesy visit to the Governor at his office. The move, according to the Governor, will ensure that all NIPOST properties are properly identified, secured, and officially returned to the postal agency.
Governor Otti stressed that encroachment on government-owned land is unlawful and will not be tolerated under his administration. He specifically called for urgent intervention regarding a reported case at Item in Bende Local Government Area, where unauthorized individuals allegedly took over postal land and disrupted staff operations.
He instructed relevant government officials, including those in charge of lands and local government affairs, to immediately address the issue and prevent further violations. The Governor emphasized the need for proper documentation and demarcation of all NIPOST properties across Abia State to safeguard them from future disputes.
In addition, Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to collaborate with NIPOST, noting that partnerships between state and federal institutions are essential for efficient service delivery. He encouraged the agency to improve its operational efficiency and explore ways to make postal services more commercially viable.
Highlighting the strategic presence of post offices in all local government areas, the Governor urged NIPOST to provide accurate data on its locations across the state, including areas with multiple facilities. He commended the Postal Manager’s vision and assured her of the government’s support in enhancing service delivery.
Earlier, Mrs. Amadi appealed to the state government to intervene in ongoing encroachments on NIPOST lands, citing a recent incident in Item where staff were reportedly driven away. She also expressed her willingness to strengthen collaboration with the state government.
Among the proposals presented were the designation of NIPOST’s Express Mail Service as the official logistics provider for government correspondence and the introduction of commemorative postage stamps to promote Abia’s cultural heritage globally.
