Peter Obi urges urgent diplomatic action after the U.S. names Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern,” citing worsening insecurity and leadership failure.
The recent decision by the United States government to classify Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) and hint at possible military intervention has sparked widespread anxiety among Nigerians. Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has described the development as a grave issue that deserves the attention of every patriotic citizen.
According to Obi, the deteriorating state of insecurity across the nation has reached an alarming level, resulting in the tragic loss of thousands of innocent lives and the destruction of valuable property. He referenced a recent Amnesty International report indicating that more than 10,000 people have been killed in Nigeria since May 2023, describing the situation as both “unwarranted and condemnable.”
Obi lamented that the nation’s current challenges stem largely from leadership failure. He stressed that while insecurity did not begin under the current administration, the situation has worsened due to what he called the government’s lack of competence, commitment, and prudent resource management.
“Nigeria needs leaders with patriotism and passion leaders who can unite the country, protect citizens, and restore peace, truth, and justice,” Obi stated.
He urged the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government to rise above excuses and take decisive measures to safeguard the lives of Nigerians.

Highlighting Nigeria’s long-standing partnership with the United States in promoting democracy and regional stability, Obi appealed for constructive diplomatic engagement between both nations. He emphasized that collaboration, rather than confrontation, remains the best path toward resolving the country’s mounting security crisis.
“As democracies, Nigeria and the U.S. must continue working together towards peace and security. This is the time for dialogue, understanding, and decisive action,” Obi concluded.
