Police clarify teargas use on protesters near Aso Villa, citing court order violation and commitment to maintaining law and order.
The Nigeria Police Force has issued a clarification following reports of teargas use against protesters attempting to march towards the Aso Villa in Abuja. According to the police, the protesters acted in clear violation of an existing court order that restricts demonstrations around sensitive government locations, including the Aso Villa, National Assembly, Force Headquarters, Court of Appeal, Eagle Square, and Shehu Shagari Way.
In a statement, the police described their actions as lawful and consistent with their mandate to maintain order and ensure public safety. The Force emphasized that its officers did not block the road, as widely speculated, but rather cleared it after protesters had obstructed the route. This intervention, according to the police, was necessary to ensure the free flow of traffic and allow other citizens to reach their destinations without hindrance.
