FG issues flood warning to Abia and 12 states, urging residents and authorities to prepare for heavy rainfall and possible flooding from Sept 19–23, 2025.
The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a strong warning to residents and authorities in Abia State and 12 other states to prepare for possible flooding between September 19 and 23, 2025.
The National Flood Early Warning Centre (FEWS Centre) under the Federal Ministry of Environment raised this alert, warning that heavy rainfall during this period could trigger flooding in several parts of the country. The alert was signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department.
States on Flood Watch
The FEWS Centre listed the following states and locations as high-risk areas:
Abia State: Arochukwu
Akwa Ibom State: Abak, Etinan, Ikot-Ekpene, Uyo
Bauchi State: Bauchi, Jama’a, Kafin-Madaki
Benue State: Ito, Vande-Ikya
Borno State: Dikwa
Cross River State: Edor, Ikom, Ogoja
Kano State: Bebeji, Gezawa, Gwarzo, Kano, Karaye, Tudun-Wada, Wudil
Kebbi State: Shanga, Yelwa
Kwara State: Lafiagi
Plateau State: Bukuru, Jos
Sokoto State: Isa, Makira
Yobe State: Dapchi
Zamfara State: Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi
Government’s Call for Action
The Federal Government urged relevant state agencies, emergency responders, and local communities to take proactive measures to reduce the impact of the expected flooding. This includes clearing drainage systems, creating emergency shelters, and sensitizing residents in flood-prone areas.
