U.S. Embassy Abuja warns of possible protests amid U.S.-Iran war, cancels visa appointments, and urges Americans to avoid crowds.

The U.S. Embassy Abuja has issued a security alert warning of possible protests in Nigeria’s capital following escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. The advisory comes amid concerns that demonstrations could erupt in Abuja in response to the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict.

According to the embassy, there is a high likelihood of protests on March 4, 2026, prompting officials to cancel all visa appointments for the day. American citizens residing in or visiting Abuja have been urged to remain indoors and avoid public gatherings, markets, shopping centers, and places of worship until further notice.

The warning follows recent marches organized by Shiite groups reportedly linked to the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in several northern cities. Some previous protests involving such groups have reportedly led to clashes with security forces, raising concerns about potential unrest.

The broader crisis began on February 28, 2026, after U.S. and Israeli airstrikes targeted Iranian sites. Iran responded with retaliatory actions, and unconfirmed reports have circulated about the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The situation has heightened global tensions and triggered reactions in several countries, including Nigeria.

While no protests had been recorded in Abuja at the time of the alert, Nigerian security agencies have reportedly increased deployments across the Federal Capital Territory. Authorities have emphasized vigilance but urged residents not to panic.
In its advisory, the embassy encouraged U.S. citizens to avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place, stay clear of large crowds, and closely monitor local media for updates. Individuals were also advised to maintain a low profile, keep their mobile phones charged, carry proper identification, and review personal security plans. Travelers were reminded to vary routes and travel times to reduce predictability and to familiarize themselves with emergency exits in public buildings.
The Consular Sections of the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos remain operational. Citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely security updates and facilitate communication during emergencies.

As tensions in the Middle East continue to evolve, both diplomatic missions and local authorities in Nigeria are maintaining heightened alert levels to safeguard residents and visitors.
