Hon. Obi Aguocha has praised the Abia State Government for launching an ambitious plan to improve electricity supply across the state, describing it as a decisive step toward economic expansion and social transformation.
Aguocha delivered the commendation during the groundbreaking ceremony for two 7.5 MVA substations in Umuahia—representing a combined 15 MVA capacity targeted at strengthening power distribution in the capital city and nearby communities.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday, was presided over by Governor Alex Chioma Otti and attended by key officials, including the Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, PhD. The substation projects are being jointly financed by the state and the federal government. One facility is funded through the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) under the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, while the other is financed by the Abia State Government under the proposed 2026 budget.
Governor Otti announced a three-month completion target for the state-funded facility, urging NDPHC to fast-track its project so both substations can be commissioned by June 2026. According to him, strategic planning is vital to addressing rising electricity demand and ensuring stable supply across Abia.
In his remarks, Hon. Aguocha commended the administration for prioritizing reliable electricity, noting its direct connection to the state’s economic future.
“Stable electricity is the heartbeat of Abia’s growth. No community or business can achieve meaningful progress without dependable power, and this initiative is a major step forward for the state,” he stated.
Aguocha further emphasized that improved power infrastructure would reduce outages, boost productivity, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents. He described the project as a catalyst for a new economic era.
“These substations mark a new era for power in Umuahia. It is a project that will unlock the economic potential of our communities and create opportunities for businesses to thrive,” he added.
Governor Otti also revealed ongoing collaboration with Heirs Holdings to ensure consistent gas supply to Aba Power Limited, a move expected to stabilize power generation and distribution in the region. He commended recent national reforms that empower states and private investors to expand electricity infrastructure.
Aguocha, in a goodwill message, lauded the Governor’s long-term vision for infrastructure development.
“Dr. Alex Otti’s strategic investment in these substations demonstrates visionary leadership. It is not just about bringing electricity to homes and businesses; it is about laying a foundation for long-term development and prosperity in Abia State,” he said.
