In a decisive and humanitarian call to action, Hon. Obinna Aguocha, Chairman of the House Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of the 10th House of Representatives, has petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, over the deteriorating health of detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In two letters dated August 27, 2025, Aguocha raised urgent concerns about Kanu’s “multiple organ insufficiency,” describing his condition as life-threatening. He warned that continued detention without timely medical intervention risks a humanitarian disaster and violates constitutional obligations.
Aguocha recalled his personal visit to Kanu on August 21, 2025, along with alarming reports from legal and medical teams. According to him, Kanu’s health has worsened dramatically and requires immediate specialist hospital care. “It is clear that his physical condition continues to deteriorate significantly,” Aguocha stressed, citing a medical report indicating multiple organ insufficiency.

The lawmaker outlined two urgent steps for the Federal Government:
Direct the DSS to transfer Kanu immediately to a properly equipped hospital as advised by his doctors.

Constitute an independent panel of medical experts to examine Kanu and ensure access to specialist treatment.
Aguocha emphasized that the issue transcends political lines, calling it a humanitarian and constitutional imperative. He urged President Tinubu and the AGF to act decisively to uphold justice, human dignity, and due process. He also attached a detailed medical report to support his appeal, warning that further delay could lead to irreversible consequences.
This intervention has renewed public debate about the Federal Government’s handling of Nnamdi Kanu’s prolonged detention and placed fresh scrutiny on President Tinubu’s commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and constitutional governance.
