Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha, Member of the House of Representatives representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, has expressed serious concerns over the renewed tension surrounding the Monday sit-at-home directive in the South-East.
In an online media statement issued in the early hours of Monday, January 28, 2026, Aguocha said recent actions by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, have unintentionally revived fear and resistance that had largely subsided over the past three years.
According to the lawmaker, markets, plazas, and commercial centres across the South-East had gradually returned to normal operations after prolonged disruptions. He noted that sustained efforts by community leaders and stakeholders had helped restore peace and economic activity in both rural and urban trading hubs.
Aguocha acknowledged that the intention to permanently end the sit-at-home practice may be well-meaning, but argued that the method adopted by the Anambra State Government was counterproductive. He warned that forceful directives and punitive measures could deepen resentment, reignite agitation, and expose the region to renewed insecurity and criminal activity.
The federal legislator stressed that state governments lack the legal authority to compel private business owners to open or close their shops. He described such decisions as personal choices protected under fundamental human rights, adding that similar logic could not be applied to religious or personal business practices observed on other days of the week.
Aguocha further linked the persistence of agitation in the South-East to unresolved national issues, including the continued detention of IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, perceived bias in Nigeria’s justice system, alleged marginalisation of the Igbo people, and growing youth discontent. He warned that failure to address these concerns could sustain a cycle of distrust toward the Nigerian state.
He also cautioned political actors against assuming electoral support from the region without meaningful engagement, stating that political participation must be earned through justice, equity, and respect for rights.
While reaffirming his commitment to representing his constituents’ interests, Aguocha called for calm and restraint, urging residents to avoid violence or destruction of property. At the same time, he encouraged lawful and peaceful advocacy for fundamental rights, assuring constituents of his solidarity and continued leadership.
