Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking one of the most significant political realignments in Nigeria’s current political landscape.
Speaking during a meeting with key stakeholders, Governor Fubara declared that it had become necessary to openly align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rather than offer what he described as “backdoor support.” According to him, only a full and public identification with the President’s leadership would allow his administration to collaborate effectively at the federal level.
“We can’t support President Tinubu if we don’t fully identify with him, not just backyard support. Our decision this evening is that we are moving to the APC,” Fubara stated while formally announcing his move.

The governor’s defection signals a new phase in Rivers State politics and may reshape alliances within the South-South region. Political analysts say the move could strengthen relations between the state government and the federal administration as preparations for upcoming elections intensify.
