Former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia North, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu, has called for a constitutional amendment to establish a single-term tenure of six years for the President and State Governors in Nigeria.
Speaking on the need for political stability and effective governance, Kalu emphasized that the current two-term system often breeds unnecessary tension, distractions, and excessive competition within political parties. According to him, adopting a single six-year tenure will allow leaders to focus entirely on delivering good governance rather than engaging in early re-election battles.
He urged the Constitution Review Committee to carefully study this proposal and include it in their recommendations during the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“A single term of six years for the President and Governors will reduce political pressure, promote unity, and ensure leaders work with full dedication to their mandates,” Kalu stated.
The Senator further explained that such a system would help eliminate the abuse of incumbency and reduce the cost of elections, paving the way for a more efficient and transparent democratic process.

Many political observers have since supported Kalu’s call, noting that the idea could strengthen democracy by prioritizing service delivery over political ambition.
