Sowore meets Jonathan in Abuja as the former President vows to discuss Nnamdi Kanu’s release with Tinubu, joining calls for justice and peace.
In a renewed effort to secure justice and promote national unity, human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore met with former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan earlier today in Abuja to discuss the continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking after the meeting, Sowore revealed that the discussions focused on the urgent need to secure Kanu’s release and to address the long-standing grievances of marginalization that have fueled tensions across the country. He emphasized that resolving Kanu’s case decisively and fairly is crucial to achieving peace, fairness, and reconciliation in Nigeria.
According to Sowore, former President Jonathan acknowledged the importance of finding a just resolution to the issue and assured that he would meet with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu soon to discuss Kanu’s case directly.
“President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. I thank him sincerely for recognizing the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing,” Sowore said.

Jonathan’s commitment adds him to a growing list of prominent Nigerians calling for Nnamdi Kanu’s release including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), Senator Shehu Sani, and several other national figures across political and regional divides.
Sowore further stated that Kanu’s continued detention represents an injustice, noting that other politically motivated cases involving regional or ethnic activists have been dismissed or withdrawn. He called on the Federal Government to extend the same fairness to Kanu.
In his appeal, Sowore urged political, cultural, and religious leaders across Nigeria particularly those from the South-East such as Peter Obi, Governor Charles Soludo, Governor Alex Otti, Governor Francis Nwifuru, Governor Peter Mbah, Governor Hope Uzodinma, and Ohaneze Ndigbo President-General John Mbata to unite in the campaign for justice and freedom.
Reaffirming his commitment to peaceful mobilization, Sowore stated that he will continue to advocate for justice, equity, and national healing until Nnamdi Kanu regains his freedom.
“Nnamdi Kanu should be set free. His release will signal fairness, restore trust, and promote peace across Nigeria,” he concluded.
The meeting between Sowore and Jonathan is seen as a major step in the growing #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign, which continues to gain momentum both within and outside Nigeria.
