Soyinka criticizes Seyi Tinubu’s heavy security, joking that he should have been sent to stop the Benin coup, urging restraint in the use of presidential power.
Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has stirred public discussion after commenting on the level of security reportedly accompanying Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Speaking critically but with a touch of humor, Soyinka said the President “didn’t need to deploy the Air Force or military to stop the coup in Benin Republic he should have sent Seyi Tinubu instead.”
Soyinka’s remarks, which have trended widely, come amid recent concerns about the use of heavy security convoys during Seyi Tinubu’s public appearances. The literary icon urged the presidency to avoid what he described as excessive displays of power, warning: “Let’s not overdo things.”
He emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy thrives when public officials and their families demonstrate restraint, transparency, and respect for citizens. According to him, security should be prioritized for national threats, not used as a symbol of political influence.

Soyinka’s comments reflect ongoing debates about governance, accountability, and the optics of leadership at a time when Nigerians are facing economic and security challenges. His message underscores the need for moderation from those connected to power, especially in moments of heightened tension across West Africa.
