Tea is widely loved for its soothing taste and health benefits, but medical experts caution that drinking it alongside certain foods may interfere with the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients. While tea contains antioxidants that support overall wellness, it also has compounds that can limit how well the body takes in key minerals when consumed at the wrong time.

Doctors explain that tea, especially black and green varieties, contains tannins and polyphenols. These natural substances can bind to minerals such as iron, calcium, and zinc, making them harder for the digestive system to absorb. When tea is taken together with meals rich in these nutrients, the body may not fully benefit from the food consumed.

One major concern is the combination of tea with iron-rich foods like beans, vegetables, and fortified grains. Tannins in tea can significantly reduce iron absorption, which may contribute to fatigue or weakness over time if the habit is repeated frequently. Health professionals also advise caution when drinking tea alongside dairy products, as it may affect calcium uptake needed for strong bones and teeth.

Additionally, taking tea with protein-rich meals may slow digestion, reducing how efficiently nutrients are processed. This does not mean tea is harmful, but timing matters. Experts recommend drinking tea at least one hour before or after meals to allow the body to absorb nutrients properly.

In summary, tea remains a healthy beverage when consumed wisely. Doctors encourage moderation and proper timing to avoid unintended nutritional deficiencies and to ensure the body gains maximum benefit from both food and drink.
