Tanker drivers threaten shutdown of Dangote refinery fuel loading, sparking fears of a crippling nationwide fuel crisis in Nigeria.
Nigeria may be heading into another fuel crisis as tanker drivers under the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) have threatened to halt all fuel loading operations.
The drivers accuse the management of the Dangote refinery—Africa’s biggest oil facility—of waging a “silent war” against their union, sparking a bitter standoff that could cripple fuel distribution nationwide.
If the warning is carried out, the fallout will be catastrophic: fuel queues at filling stations, skyrocketing pump prices, and transport paralysis across major cities.
Union leaders say they have been “pushed to the wall” by what they describe as disregard for drivers’ welfare and hostile treatment from refinery management. They insist that unless urgent intervention comes from government authorities, they will have no choice but to withdraw their services.

Industry analysts warn that the shutdown threat is a ticking time bomb. With Dangote refinery positioned as Nigeria’s primary hope for energy stability, any disruption could plunge the country into one of its worst fuel shortages in recent years.
As tension rises, all eyes are now on the Federal Government to act swiftly before the looming showdown explodes into a nationwide crisis.
