Tinubu orders nationwide rice distribution for Ramadan and Lent to support Nigerians amid rising food costs and economic challenges.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a nationwide rice distribution initiative aimed at supporting Nigerians during the holy seasons of Ramadan and Lent. The program is expected to reach communities across the country through coordinated local networks.
The initiative was announced by Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State and leader of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors. According to him, the distribution exercise will take place across all 36 states of Nigeria as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

Uzodimma explained that the effort is part of the federal government’s broader support program designed to assist citizens during important religious observances. Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, and Lent, a significant period for Christians, often involve fasting and reflection, making food support programs particularly meaningful for many households.
The planned distribution follows a similar food relief initiative carried out during the Christmas season, when the government also provided rice to communities across the country. Officials say the latest move is intended to ease the burden on families facing high food prices.
Recent economic data indicates that food inflation has started to slow, currently estimated at about 8.89 percent. However, many staple foods remain expensive for ordinary Nigerians. The situation has been linked to broader economic adjustments, including the removal of fuel subsidies and ongoing financial pressures affecting households nationwide.
Supporters of the program describe it as a compassionate intervention aimed at helping vulnerable Nigerians cope with the cost of living during a period of fasting and prayer. They believe the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to providing relief while economic reforms continue.
However, critics argue that such distributions may offer only temporary relief. Some have raised concerns that deeper structural issues.such as insecurity affecting farming communities and rising living costs require more long-term policy solutions.
Despite differing opinions, the rice distribution initiative is expected to roll out through community channels in the coming weeks, targeting families across the country during the Ramadan and Lent seasons.
