Finance Minister Wale Edun elected as Nigerian Boxing Federation President, pledging to revive the sport and promote grassroots development.

Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has officially emerged as the new President of the Nigerian Boxing Federation (NBF). His election marks the beginning of what many are describing as a transformative period for boxing in Nigeria.

The announcement came after a keenly contested federation congress, where Edun received overwhelming support from delegates across various states. His emergence is seen as a major boost to the sport, which has struggled for stability, sponsorship, and global recognition in recent years.

In his acceptance speech, Edun expressed deep appreciation to the delegates for their confidence in his leadership. He pledged to reposition the Nigerian Boxing Federation to meet international standards while promoting grassroots participation and youth empowerment through sports.

“Boxing has a proud history in Nigeria. My goal is to restore that pride, empower our athletes, and make the federation a model for good governance and excellence,” Edun said.

Under his new role, Edun is expected to introduce far-reaching reforms aimed at improving the welfare of boxers, modernizing training facilities, and attracting private sector investment into the sport. Analysts believe that his experience as an economist and administrator will bring efficiency, accountability, and strategic partnerships to Nigerian boxing.

Sports stakeholders across the country have lauded his emergence, expressing optimism that his leadership will revitalize the sport. The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and several former boxers described Edun’s election as a “timely intervention” capable of unlocking the sport’s full potential.

Observers also note that the synergy between sports and the economy could foster new opportunities for youth employment, tourism, and national branding. With Nigeria’s rich boxing heritage from legends like Hogan Bassey and Dick Tiger to modern champions the nation’s boxing community is hopeful for a brighter future under Edun’s leadership.
