According to a recent A prominent Northern group, Arewa Group, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, demanding the reversal of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension and an end to what they describe as the harassment of Northern senators.

In a strong statement, the group vowed to take to the streets in protest, warning that they would shut down major highways, including the Lokoja-Lagos Road, to disrupt the movement of goods between the North and South. They also threatened to occupy the National Assembly, insisting on Akpabio’s resignation.

The group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene, accusing Akpabio of systematically targeting Northern senators. They pointed out past conflicts between the Senate President and Senators Abdul Ningi, Ali Ndume, and now Natasha, questioning why Northern lawmakers appear to be the primary targets of suspensions and political conflicts in the Senate.

Furthermore, the group alleged that Northern Nigeria has not benefited from Akpabio’s leadership, citing his alleged role in halting the NLNG gas pipeline project that would have connected Kogi, Kaduna, Kano, and beyond. They also criticized the process leading to Senator Natasha’s suspension, arguing that she was unfairly sanctioned after raising a petition in the Senate.

The statement also referenced past allegations of misconduct against Akpabio, including claims of sexual harassment and corruption investigations by the EFCC, asserting that his leadership of the Senate is questionable.

With tensions escalating, the group warned that if their demands are not met within 48 hours, they will intensify their protests, disrupting governance and economic activities in the country.
