The Labour Party (LP) in Abia State has successfully concluded its primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, affirming candidates for the governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly positions across the state.
According to the party, the exercise was conducted simultaneously in all 184 political wards, covering the 17 Local Government Areas and 24 State Constituencies of Abia State on Saturday.
In a statement issued by the Abia State Publicity Secretary of the party, Iroegbu Emenike, the primaries were described as peaceful, transparent, orderly and completely free of disruptions, with no reports of violence or irregularities from any part of the state.
The party stated that the process was carried out in full compliance with the Electoral Act and the Labour Party’s guidelines, particularly the consensus and affirmation mechanisms adopted to ensure a smooth and credible exercise.
Following the completion of the affirmation process, Governor Alex Chioma Otti emerged as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate for the 2027 election.
For the Senate, the party affirmed Enyinnaya Abaribe for Abia South, Darlington Nwokocha for Abia Central, and Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha Bourdex for Abia North Senatorial District.
The party also unveiled its candidates for the House of Representatives. They include Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah (Isuikwuato/Umunneochi), Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa (Arochukwu/Ohafia), Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso (Bende), Hon. Obinna Aguocha (Ikwuano/Umuahia), Hon. Ginger Onwusibe (Isiala Ngwa North/South), Hon. Alex Ifeanyi Mascot Ikwechegh (Aba North/South), Okezie Chiemela Wambu (Osisioma/Ugwunagbo/Obingwa), and Nwoke Adigwe (Ukwa East/West).
Similarly, candidates emerged across the 24 State House of Assembly constituencies, including Rt. Hon. Emma Emeruwa, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini, Hon. Uchenna Okoro, Hon. Ehuchie Ijeoma, Hon. Ucheonye Stephen, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe, Hon. Chinedum Okorie, Hon. Boniface Isienyi, Hon. Ugochukwu Iheonunekwu, Hon. Rowland Ceaser, Hon. Mkpa Oju Uka, Hon. Nwoke Kalu Mba, Hon. Lucky Johnson, Hon. Kelechi Seth Ebere, Hon. Victoria Dibumma Onwubiko, Hon. Chijioke Uruakpa, Hon. Lewis Obiayi, Hon. Ahukanna Joshua, Hon. Iheanacho Nwogu, Hon. Fyne Ahuama, Hon. Chinasa Anthony, Barr. Akaliro Anderson, Hon. Emeka Jacob Obioma and Hon. Ume Mathias.
The Labour Party said the successful conduct of the primaries demonstrates that internal democracy can flourish in an atmosphere of peace, unity and consensus. The party noted that the exercise reflected the collective will of members and showcased political maturity among stakeholders.
While expressing satisfaction with the outcome, the party contrasted its peaceful process with the challenges and disputes reportedly witnessed in the primaries of some other political parties, stressing that its members remained united and focused on the task ahead.
The party further called on members, supporters and residents of Abia State to maintain unity as preparations begin for the 2027 general elections.
Labour Party also commended its National Working Committee, State Working Committee, party leaders, aspirants, security agencies, officials of Independent National Electoral Commission, ward executives and members whose contributions ensured the successful conduct of the exercise across the state.
