The Abia State Government has suspended the Clerk of the State House of Assembly, John Pedro Irokansi, over allegations of misconduct, pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
The suspension was communicated in a letter dated May 20, 2026, and signed by the State Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere. The government, however, did not disclose the specific nature of the allegations against the senior legislative official.
Following the suspension, Promise Onwukwe, a Deputy Director in the Legislative Department of the Abia State House of Assembly, has been appointed as Acting Clerk with immediate effect.
According to the directive, Onwukwe is to assume full administrative responsibility for the Clerk’s office while investigations continue. His appointment will remain in effect until the inquiry is concluded or further instructions are issued by the appropriate authorities.
The Acting Clerk has also been directed to ensure the safety and proper management of all government assets, official records, and documents under the custody of the office, in line with existing civil service regulations.
Irokansi is a veteran civil servant who has served as Clerk of the Abia State House of Assembly for approximately 16 years. During his tenure, he worked under three successive administrations in the state, overseeing legislative administrative functions.
The government’s decision marks a significant development within the state’s legislative bureaucracy, as authorities continue efforts to address the allegations and ensure accountability in public service.
