Vandalism of Six Transmission Towers Disrupts Power Supply in Parts of Nigeria
Electricity supply has been disrupted across several parts of Nigeria following the destruction of six transmission towers along the critical Apir-Lafia 330kV transmission line in Nasarawa State, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed.
According to TCN, the incident was caused by acts of vandalism that severely damaged key infrastructure responsible for transmitting electricity across parts of the country. The affected transmission line serves as a major power corridor, linking electricity generation sources to distribution networks and ensuring stable power supply to millions of consumers.
The company disclosed that the vandalized towers were discovered after a significant outage was reported on the line. Preliminary investigations revealed that the structures had been deliberately damaged, leading to the collapse of sections of the transmission network and disrupting the flow of electricity.
TCN described the attack as a major setback to ongoing efforts aimed at improving power supply and strengthening the national grid. The company warned that repeated vandalism of critical power infrastructure continues to threaten the reliability of electricity delivery and imposes huge financial burdens on the sector.
Technical teams have since been mobilized to the affected area to assess the extent of the damage and commence emergency reconstruction works. TCN assured electricity consumers that all necessary measures are being taken to restore normal power transmission as quickly as possible.
The transmission company also appealed to residents and community leaders in areas hosting power infrastructure to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies. It stressed that protecting national assets is essential to ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply and supporting economic development.
Industry observers note that vandalism remains one of the major challenges confronting Nigeria’s power sector, often resulting in prolonged outages, increased operational costs, and setbacks to investments in energy infrastructure.
