Troops Arrest Three Suspected Arms Dealers, Recover Weapons in Abia Community

Troops of the Headquarters, 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, under the ongoing Operation Eastern Sanity II, have arrested three suspected arms dealers and recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition during a security operation in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.

The operation, conducted in the early hours of June 7, 2026, is part of the Nigerian Army’s intensified efforts to curb the spread of illegal firearms and enhance security across Abia State and the wider South-East region.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, Major Mazinho Attah, troops from the 14 Brigade Garrison and the 14 Military Intelligence Regiment, working alongside other security agencies, carried out a coordinated cordon-and-search exercise at Amaetiti Iheshiowa Community in Arochukwu.

The operation was reportedly launched following credible intelligence indicating the presence and circulation of illegal arms and ammunition within the area.

During the security raid, three suspects identified as Francis Ifere, 37, Oso Kalu, 40, and Ifere Oti, 32, were apprehended by the troops.

Security operatives recovered seven locally manufactured dane guns, twenty-two live cartridges, and a motorcycle believed to have been used in connection with the suspects’ activities.

The troops also impounded a commercial bus linked to one Stephen Kalu, who allegedly escaped before the arrival of the security personnel. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect and uncover possible links to wider criminal networks.

The Nigerian Army noted that troops deployed across various battalion areas within the Brigade’s operational jurisdiction have continued to intensify surveillance operations, night patrols, intelligence gathering, and routine security missions aimed at denying criminal elements the opportunity to operate freely.

Military authorities described the latest operation as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing fight against illegal arms trafficking and other forms of criminal activity in the South-East.

The Headquarters, 14 Brigade Nigerian Army, reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining robust security operations in collaboration with sister agencies to ensure lasting peace, stability, and the protection of lives and property across Abia State and neighboring communities.
