Abia Police Intensify Enforcement Against Unregistered Vehicles and Tampered Number Plates
The Abia State Police Command has launched a statewide enforcement operation targeting unregistered vehicles and vehicles operating with tampered, obscured, defaced, altered, or illegally covered number plates.
The initiative follows a nationwide directive issued by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, ordering the impoundment of unregistered vehicles and the prosecution of offenders as part of efforts to strengthen security and curb criminal activities across Nigeria.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, directed officers across the command to carry out the exercise in a strict, coordinated, and professional manner while ensuring full compliance with the law.
The police explained that unregistered vehicles and altered number plates pose significant security threats because they are frequently used by criminal elements to evade identification and escape arrest after committing crimes.
CP Danladi Isa stated that the increasing use of such vehicles undermines law enforcement operations, obstructs effective crime detection, and creates challenges for investigators trying to track down offenders.
He further instructed all supervisory officers to ensure that the operation is conducted with utmost professionalism, civility, and respect for the fundamental rights of residents throughout Abia State.
The Commissioner also issued a strong warning to police personnel, stressing that any officer found engaging in extortion, harassment, intimidation, or any form of misconduct during the exercise would face severe disciplinary sanctions.
Residents were encouraged to report cases of police misconduct through the Command’s Complaint Response Unit on 09031593827 or 09035401645.
Motorists across the state have been advised to immediately regularise their vehicle registration documents and stop using tampered, obscured, defaced, altered, or unlawfully covered number plates to avoid sanctions.
The police also urged residents to remain vigilant and support ongoing security operations by reporting suspicious movements, activities, or individuals to the nearest police station.
Emergency hotlines provided by the Command include: 08035415405, 08079210004, 08079210005, and 08079210006.
The Abia State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, emphasizing that public cooperation remains essential in building a safer and more secure state.
