The Abia State Government has officially announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as “Okada,” within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia as part of efforts to improve security and urban transportation management.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, Governor Alex Chioma Otti has approved the prohibition, which will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.
The government explained that the policy is aimed at strengthening security, enhancing public safety, reducing traffic congestion, and establishing a more organized transportation system across the state’s major urban centres.
Under the new directive, all commercial motorcycle operators are required to completely stop operating within the designated metropolitan areas before the implementation date. Security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the order.
The government further warned that any operator who violates the ban will face arrest, while the motorcycle used for such illegal operations will be confiscated in accordance with existing laws.
Officials stated that the decision forms part of the state’s broader urban renewal and security enhancement agenda designed to create safer and more efficient cities for residents and visitors alike.
The Abia State Government also appealed to residents, transport unions, community leaders, and stakeholders to support the implementation process by complying fully with the directive.
Authorities emphasized that collective cooperation remains essential to achieving sustainable development, improving public order, and safeguarding lives and property across the affected areas.
Residents and all concerned persons have therefore been advised to take immediate notice of the new policy and comply accordingly ahead of its commencement date.
