Aguocha Saves Over 22,000 Nigerians from Job Loss

Member representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha, has received widespread commendation from Nigerians following his intervention in a petition that helped protect the jobs and academic future of more than 22,000 Nigerians affected by the Federal Government’s proposed invalidation of certificates obtained from universities in the Republics of Benin and Togo.

Aguocha’s latest intervention has further strengthened his reputation as a lawmaker committed to people-centred representation, advocacy and the defence of citizens’ rights irrespective of political, ethnic or geographical boundaries.

For many observers, one of the defining pillars of Aguocha’s representation has been his readiness to stand in the gap whenever Nigerians face circumstances capable of threatening their livelihoods and future aspirations.

His advocacy efforts have benefited numerous constituents over time, but this particular intervention transcended constituency lines and directly impacted thousands of Nigerians across the country.

The issue arose following an announcement by the then Minister of Education that certificates obtained by Nigerians from universities in the Republic of Benin and Togo from 2017 onward would no longer be recognised. Reports also emerged suggesting that some Nigerians employed by the Federal Government had already begun losing their jobs as a result of the policy.

Stakeholders warned that if the directive had been fully implemented, more than 22,000 Nigerians could have been adversely affected, with many at risk of unemployment despite possessing legitimately earned qualifications.

Upon learning of the situation, Aguocha took up Petition No. 445 of 2024, which sought a reversal of the blanket invalidation policy. Through his presentation and sustained engagement at the House of Representatives, the matter received legislative attention and was eventually referred to the House Committee on Public Petitions.
Following extensive deliberations, the House adopted recommendations that favoured a balanced and fair approach.

Rather than imposing a sweeping cancellation of certificates, the House recommended a case-by-case verification process aimed at identifying fraudulent credentials while protecting genuine graduates who obtained their qualifications through legitimate means.

The recommendations also urged the Federal Government to strengthen collaboration with educational authorities in Benin and Togo, improve verification systems, intensify public awareness campaigns on accreditation processes and align future policies with Nigeria’s bilateral, regional and international obligations.

The intervention has been described by many Nigerians as a major victory for justice, fairness and responsible lawmaking.

Supporters argue that Aguocha’s actions prevented a policy that could have plunged thousands of families into economic hardship while restoring confidence in the National Assembly’s oversight and representative functions.

They further noted that effective representation goes beyond sponsoring bills and attending plenary sessions, but also involves standing up for citizens whenever their welfare, rights and livelihoods are threatened.

The appreciation expressed by affected Nigerians was formally conveyed through a letter written by their legal representative on behalf of the Coalition of Stakeholders in Education in the Republic of Benin and Togo.
The letter acknowledged Aguocha’s role in championing their cause from the petition stage through the House deliberations, describing his intervention as instrumental to achieving a favourable outcome.

Political observers have described the development as an example of impactful leadership driven by service rather than public applause.

For many beneficiaries, Aguocha’s intervention was more than a legislative exercise; it was an act that restored hope, protected dignity and reaffirmed the importance of responsive governance.
