Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle (Okada) operations in Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia as part of a broader strategy to tackle insecurity and improve public safety across the state.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a media briefing held at the Government House in Umuahia on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, following the State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
According to the commissioner, the decision forms part of the government’s proactive efforts to address security challenges and create a safer environment for residents and businesses operating within the affected cities.
Abia Government Intensifies Security Measures
Prince Okey Kanu explained that the restriction on commercial motorcycle operations is one of several initiatives being implemented by the administration to strengthen security architecture across the state.
He noted that the government remains committed to protecting lives and property while introducing modern systems that will improve communication and engagement between citizens and public institutions.
The commissioner also revealed that Governor Alex Otti has approved the establishment of a technology-driven citizen engagement centre designed to facilitate direct and real-time interaction between residents and government agencies.
New Citizen Engagement Centre to Improve Service Delivery
The proposed centre will function as a central platform where citizens can submit inquiries, complaints, suggestions and feedback, which will then be directed to relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) for prompt action.
According to Kanu, the initiative is expected to enhance transparency, accountability and responsiveness in governance.
Beyond improving service delivery, the platform will also serve as a data collection and processing hub to support evidence-based policymaking, programme evaluation and effective feedback management across government institutions.
Abia Partners MTN for 100% Network Coverage
The state government also provided an update on its strategic partnership with MTN Nigeria aimed at achieving complete voice and data network coverage across Abia State.
The first phase of the project is expected to be completed within the next eight to ten weeks and is designed to provide reliable telecommunications services to communities across the state, including remote areas.
Officials said the initiative would promote social and financial inclusion, improve access to healthcare and educational resources, and contribute significantly to strengthening security operations.
Residents in underserved communities are expected to benefit from expanded broadband services upon completion of the project.
Digital Channels to Connect Citizens With Government
Chief Information Officer to the Governor, Gerald Ilukwe, clarified that the citizen engagement initiative is not intended to operate as a physical office where residents must visit in person.
Instead, it will function as a digital contact centre that allows citizens to interact with government through multiple communication channels, including telephone calls, emails, WhatsApp and other online platforms.
He explained that the system will operate similarly to customer service platforms used by banks, airlines and telecommunications companies, enabling residents to access government services remotely without unnecessary travel.
Through the platform, citizens will be able to make inquiries, report concerns, submit feedback and receive responses from government agencies efficiently.
