BREAKING: Senate Passes Tough FRSC Amendment Bill, Imposes ₦100,000 Fine for Traffic Violations

Nigerian Senate Passes FRSC Amendment Bill 2026, Introduces Tougher Fines for Traffic Violations

The Nigerian Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, introducing stricter penalties aimed at improving road safety and promoting greater compliance with traffic regulations across the country.

Under the newly approved amendment, motorists and other road users who fail to obey traffic lights, road signs, pavement markings, or other road traffic directives will face a fine of ₦100,000 upon conviction. The measure is designed to discourage reckless driving and reduce the growing number of traffic-related accidents on Nigerian roads.

The bill also targets activities considered capable of distracting drivers or endangering passengers during transit. Individuals found hawking, trading, or preaching inside commercial buses will be liable to a ₦50,000 fine if convicted.

The amendment reflects the Senate’s efforts to strengthen road safety laws and enhance discipline among road users. Lawmakers believe stricter enforcement and higher penalties will encourage motorists, passengers, and commercial transport operators to comply with traffic regulations and contribute to safer highways nationwide.
