The Abia State Government has dismissed media reports suggesting that the State has yet to pass the proposed State Police Bill, describing such publications as misleading and inconsistent with the actual legislative position in the State.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Government clarified that the Abia State House of Assembly had already passed the State Police Bill, reaffirming the State’s commitment to strengthening security through community-based policing and improved protection of lives and property.
The Government stressed that the passage of the legislation demonstrates Abia State’s preparedness to embrace the proposed State Police framework as part of ongoing constitutional reform efforts aimed at addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
It further noted that the initiative aligns with the broader security reform agenda championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and reflects the State’s willingness to work collaboratively towards establishing an effective policing structure that responds more directly to the security needs of local communities.
Consequently, the Government urged residents, media organisations, journalists and other stakeholders to disregard the inaccurate reports and seek clarification from credible and officially recognised government communication channels.
The statement also appealed to media practitioners to uphold professional standards by verifying information and confirming facts before publication, noting that inaccurate reporting could create unnecessary confusion and misinform the public.
Reiterating its commitment to transparency, accountability and responsible public communication, the Abia State Government assured residents of its continued cooperation with the Federal Government and other state governments towards ensuring the successful implementation of State Police across Nigeria.
