The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, identified as Jacob Irewa, for allegedly setting his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire following a domestic disagreement in Lokoja.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m. in Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja, Kogi State.
According to the police, the B Division Surveillance Team in Felele received information about the incident and immediately moved to the scene, where Irewa was arrested.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat, said preliminary investigations indicated that the incident followed a disagreement between the couple after Irawo allegedly burnt some of her husband’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using.
The disagreement reportedly escalated after Irewa allegedly threatened his wife, obtained petrol from his motorcycle and set her on fire.
The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele.
The police said the suspect admitted during questioning that he set his wife ablaze. He is being investigated for alleged attempted culpable homicide, while authorities continue to gather evidence and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Kogi State Police Command has condemned the alleged act of domestic violence and assured that the suspect would face prosecution if found culpable after the investigation.

The incident has sparked concern among residents, while the victim’s family and members of the community are demanding justice and appropriate legal action.
