Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has approved the immediate payment of N1 million each to 31 verified indigenes of Abia State who recently returned from South Africa.
The intervention is intended to provide immediate financial relief to the returnees and reassure them of the state government’s commitment to supporting them as they navigate the challenges associated with returning home.
According to the state government, the N1 million payment is an interim support measure, while a comprehensive profiling exercise is being conducted for the 31 beneficiaries. The profiling will examine their individual circumstances, socio-economic conditions and specific needs.
The exercise is expected to help the government develop more sustainable reintegration programmes and determine appropriate social protection interventions that can improve the welfare and economic stability of the returnees.
The administration said the initiative reflects Governor Otti’s commitment to protecting vulnerable residents and ensuring that Abians facing difficult circumstances receive meaningful support.
The government also stressed that the intervention is consistent with its broader focus on improving the dignity and wellbeing of citizens, particularly people experiencing hardship or requiring assistance to rebuild their lives.
Beyond the immediate financial assistance, the profiling process could provide a basis for tailored support that enables the returnees to regain economic independence and contribute positively to their communities.
The Abia State Government reiterated that the state remains home to all its sons and daughters, regardless of where they live or the circumstances that brought them back.
It further assured residents that no Abian would be abandoned, reaffirming its determination to create opportunities for citizens to recover, rebuild and participate meaningfully in the development of the state.
