The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) a week to clarify whether it has set limits on political donations and contributions as we gear up for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
In its request, SERAP pointed to Section 91 of the Electoral Act 2026, urging INEC to publicly outline the limits on political funding and ensure that this information is readily available to all Nigerians.
The organization emphasized that transparency in political financing is crucial for a credible electoral process, allowing citizens to grasp the rules surrounding campaign contributions before the upcoming elections.
Additionally, SERAP is calling on INEC to release the latest financial records of registered political parties. This includes audited accounts, election expenditure reports, and details of political contributions received by these parties since the 2023 general elections.
But it doesn’t stop there; SERAP also wants INEC to shed light on how it monitors campaign financing and ensures adherence to existing electoral laws. This should encompass everything from cash donations and digital payments to social media fundraising and expenditures by third parties acting on behalf of political parties or candidates.
The rights advocacy group argues that a lack of transparency in political financing could lead to excessive, undisclosed, or improper funding that might skew electoral competition and compromise the integrity of elections.
SERAP insists that Nigerians have the right to access trustworthy information about how political parties and candidates are funded. Such transparency would empower voters to make informed decisions and bolster public trust in the electoral process.

Consequently, the organization has requested that INEC respond to its demands within seven days, warning that failure to provide the requested information could have serious implications.
